Teaching Driver’s Education

Visit the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety website for the most current information.

Are you teaching your student how to drive? Helping someone get their driver’s license can be intimidating because of all the official steps and rules involved in the process. But you have helped your student learn all sorts of things, and you can help them learn this skill, too! Here is how!

Getting a Learner’s Permit

If your student is between 15 and 16 years of age, before your student takes the written test, sign up for either a Parent-Taught Driver’s Education course OR a Driver’s Education Program. See instructions below (subject to change). Your student will also need to take the Oklahoma Work Zone Safe Course. An 8th grade reading test is no longer required at all.

*Note: Driver Education is not required for those over 16, but the Work Zone Safe Course still is.  Skip steps 1 & 2. A permit is still required for six months before taking the driver’s test.

Driver’s Education

Parent-Taught Driver’s Education

Step 1: If you will be teaching your child to drive, purchase, and/or enroll in a Parent-Taught Driver’s Education course. You need this info to fill out the Affidavit in the next step. Bring your receipt for the purchase of this program with you to the testing site to get your permit. Your student may begin working on the 30 hours of classroom instruction.

Step 2: Fill out the Parent-Taught Driver’s Education Affidavit at the bottom of the Parent-Taught Driver Education Packet. Send it to the address listed on the form.  They will send it back to you stamped “Approved”.  Save this approved copy to take with you to get your permit.

Step 3: Completely read the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual and take many practice tests.

Driver’s Education Program

Step 1: Find a Driver’s Ed program in your area. Choose dates that fit your calendar, sign up your student, and pay the tuition.

Step 2: Have your student attend the class. All students should receive a completion certificate and leave the classroom segment of driver’s ed with all the knowledge needed to pass the written part of the driver’s exam. Bring this documentation with you to get your permit, along with the other items listed below.
