William Carlos Williams (1883-1963)

William Carlos Williams crew at speaking three languages (English, Spanish, French), and listening to his father tell stories and read Shakespeare in the evenings.  The stories were about adventures in the Caribbean. William Carlos Williams had a few adventures of his own while traveling to Europe with his family, but he spent most of his life in the small town of Rutherford, New Jersey.

William was at the doctor. He wrote many his poems on a prescription pad, and he wasn’t known as a poet until he retired. He was a distinctly American poet, ignoring European conventions and traditions to create something new. The public didn’t truly realize his gifts until after his death.
