HB-2953 and HB-3684 (Repealing the Tax Credit)

HSOK is in full support of these two bills, and we hope you will contact your legislators in favor of them.  These bills remove the “school choice” voucher system in Oklahoma as well as the homeschool tax credit. Homeschool Oklahoma does not agree with taking state money to fund homeschooling.  As we have stated and … Continue reading HB-2953 and HB-3684 (Repealing the Tax Credit)

HB 2950 (Removing ACT Score Differentiation)

Homeschool Oklahoma opposes HB-2950 as it currently stands.  HB-2950 supports equal ACT requirements for both homeschooling students and public school students.  While we agree with the effect of the bill, the way it is presented creates problems for the homeschooling community. Homeschooling is currently covered in Oklahoma law by the “education by other means” clause … Continue reading HB 2950 (Removing ACT Score Differentiation)

HB-2963 (Removing ACT Criteria)

HB-2963 removes the ACT as an entrance criteria for Oklahoma higher education.  Homeschool Oklahoma is not fully opposed to this bill; we do have concerns about its impact on homeschooling families. The ACT itself has become a problematic test over the past few years. While historically it measured student aptitude, the rigor and independence of … Continue reading HB-2963 (Removing ACT Criteria)

SB 1322 (Abuse Reporting Requirements)

SB-1322 prohibits the anonymous reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect allegations, referring such anonymous reports to the local 9-1-1 service.  Homeschool Oklahoma recognizes that homeschoolers have long been subject to false child abuse complaints by people who merely disagree with their decision to homeschool.  Therefore Homeschool Oklahoma supports this bill. Some important notes about … Continue reading SB 1322 (Abuse Reporting Requirements)

Responding to a Misleading Study on Vouchers and Homeschool Regulations

A debate is underway in Texas regarding their proposed school voucher program, SB2/HB3. While opinions on vouchers vary, the primary concern here is how vouchers specifically affect homeschooling freedoms. This issue is relevant to homeschoolers in Oklahoma as arguments from Texas are beginning to influence discussions locally. THSC’s Support of Vouchers The Texas Homeschool Coalition … Continue reading Responding to a Misleading Study on Vouchers and Homeschool Regulations

HB 1408

Concerns: HB1408 unnecessarily mandates additional reporting for certain transfer students, including those withdrawing to homeschool. Schools already report these transfers without a standardized form, making this bill redundant. Additionally, the bill creates an unnecessary distinction between truancy and lawful homeschooling, despite existing Oklahoma law requiring withdrawal notifications. The term “drop-out” misleadingly suggests an end to education, … Continue reading HB 1408

Why We Don’t Want the Option of “Free Money”

Many people are surprised at Homeschool Oklahoma’s position regarding vouchers or voucher-like (i.e., tax credit) payments to homeschoolers. While many people understand the basic idea that accepting government money involves accepting government strings (now or in the future), the same people often don’t understand why we don’t want it even as an option. Why are … Continue reading Why We Don’t Want the Option of “Free Money”
