Model Bill Threatens Homeschool Freedom

Homeschool Oklahoma (HSOK) strongly opposes the “Make Homeschool Safe Act,” a model bill that legislators are using to impose unnecessary and invasive government oversight on homeschooling families. Although this is not currently proposed legislation in Oklahoma, its very existence represents a dangerous push toward undermining parental rights and educational freedom nationwide.

This model legislation falsely portrays homeschooling as inherently risky, unfairly targeting law-abiding families based on isolated and unrepresentative incidents. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes about homeschoolers, erodes trust in parents, and lays the groundwork for government overreach that could profoundly harm families who choose to educate their children at home.

Oklahoma’s homeschooling families have flourished under laws that respect parental responsibility and prioritize educational freedom. For decades, our state’s homeschool laws have allowed parents to create safe, nurturing, and personalized learning environments that meet their children’s unique needs. The “Make Homeschool Safe Act,” if implemented anywhere, would burden families with unnecessary regulations, hinder educational innovation and divert valuable resources away from children’s education.

It is critical to recognize that child abuse and neglect are societal issues that span all educational settings—public, private, and homeschool alike. Singling out homeschoolers through legislation like this not only stigmatizes families but also distracts from real, effective solutions to address these issues.

The dangers of adopting model legislation like the “Make Homeschool Safe Act” are far-reaching. Families fleeing unsafe environments in public schools or seeking alternatives for children with special needs or disabilities could face increased scrutiny and barriers, robbing them of the very freedom that makes homeschooling effective and life-changing. Furthermore, the heavy-handed regulatory framework this model proposes would create a chilling effect on families considering homeschooling, discouraging them from exercising their rights to direct their children’s education.

Homeschool Oklahoma calls on all lawmakers and citizens to remain vigilant. We must reject any attempts to introduce legislation based on this flawed and harmful model. Our mission is to protect the fundamental rights of parents to educate their children free from unnecessary government interference.

This is a call to action for all Oklahomans: Stay informed, speak out, and stand with us to preserve the freedoms that have made homeschooling a powerful and effective educational choice. Together, we can ensure that Oklahoma remains a state where families are free to thrive.
