HB 2950 (Removing ACT Score Differentiation)

UPDATE – since this bill has been amended from its previous version (and now does not explicitly or implicitly mention homeschoolers), Homeschool Oklahoma is now IN FAVOR of this bill. This bill has PASSED the house and is currently under consideration in the senate under the sponsorship of Senator Prieto.

Homeschool Oklahoma is IN FAVOR of this bill. This bill removes discrimination of ACT test requirements from different types of students. The ACT is at least supposed to be a standardized test, so having different requirements from different types of students is essentially bare discrimination.

Homeschool Oklahoma was opposed to a previous version of this bill which named homeschoolers semi-explicitly. Homeschool Oklahoma believes that fairness for students and removing discrimination does not require explicitly naming all parties, and, in fact, doing so can perpetuate discrimination even as it is trying to be removed. Simply requiring just, fair treatment for all people is the right way to go.

We are thankful to representative Woolley for amending this bill to simply opt for justice and fairness in higher education rather than trying to insert homeschoolers as recipients of extra government benefits. This bill and SB-1975 are model bills for making fair government practices without explicitly legislating anything about homeschooling, and we hope other legislators use these bills as examples for future legislation.
